Q. Diagnosed with bladder infection which cleared temporarally with antibiotics. Now has returned, with blood in urine and incontinence
JESSICA L DESROSIERS
A. If the bladder infection has recurred, your pet may need an additional round of or different antibiotic for treatment. Your vet may also recommend culturing the urine bacteria to test for the exact type present which can help to tailor medication for treating it. Infections can sometimes travel up the tract to the kidneys, which may cause further trauma or pain.
Infections can sometimes be chronic in pets (especially cats) and may recur often. Sometimes changing the diet to a urine-friendly one such as with a prescription diet like c/d or a commercial diet that promotes urinary health can help boost the body and reduce infections.
