Q. My dog has black belly and it is seperating to the back legs, what is it?
JESSICA L DESROSIERS
A. Skin and color changes can be indicative of a number of things in dogs. The most common can be allergic responses, and metabolic illnesses. Allergies usually appear as itchy red bumps, but can cause a darkening of the skin with excessive licking or chewing at the area. Dogs with problems such as thyroid, diabetic or Cushing's diseases can have a blackening of the skin as a result of medication or unchecked illness. If your pet is on any medications for these diseases, or has other symptoms such as hair loss, increases in thirst and urination, or changes in eating and weight, then scheduling an appointment with your local vet is best.
