Q. Can my cats transmit ringworm to me? If yes, how do we treat cats?
JESSICA L DESROSIERS
A. Yes! Ringworm is very contagious and can be transmitted to humans, dogs and other pets in the household. If you suspect one of your cats has ringworm, isolating him from any other animals and taking extreme caution when caring for him is best. Be sure to wear gloves during any treatment and thoroughly wash hands and clothing as well as bedding he comes into contact with.
Ringworm is a fungal disease, meaning it is not a worm, but a fungus that grows on the skin in a characteristic "ring" pattern. This is usually diagnosed at your vet's with a Wood's lamp that causes the fungus to glow brightly under it. Treatment involves use of anti-fungal medications as well as anti-fungal shampoos or creams placed directly on the affected site.
