A. Black tarry stools often indicate that there is bleeding in the stomach or upper intestines. This is because the blood becomes partially digested as it goes through the GI tract, leading to the black, tarry appearance. This type of stool is very concerning, and should be treated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Be sure to bring in a sample of the stool with you to have it looked at. You can try offering a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice, however veterinary care is needed.
