Q. Unusual excessive meowing day and night
JESSICA L DESROSIERS
A. Excessive meowing in cats can be a natural behavior in some breeds (such as Siamese) but may also indicate issues such as pain or even aging-related issues such as loss of vision or hearing, especially if the increase in meowing has been sudden. Checking for other signs of illness such as pain or limp, increased bowel or urine movements (or attempts to do so), changes in eating and drinking, or even bumping into objects or not hearing/responding to sounds can indicate something more serious going on. If you suspect your cat may have an illness causing pain and an increase in meowing, then scheduling an exam with your local vet is best. Your vet can also check for loss of sight or hearing, which may be remedied at home with the use of night lights and other objects to make navigating the house easier.
