Q. My cat was just diagnosed with a urinary tract infection this morning. It has been about 12 hours and he still has not gone. Should I be concerned?

A. If he had a urine sample taken, it is possible that his bladder may have been emptied a lot and he hasn't had enough water to drink yet and refill it. He may also be hiding where he is going to the bathroom in the house (ie somewhere other than the litter box), so checking areas he frequents for any accidents (usually smaller and frequent when a UTI is present) may alert you to if he has gone.
If he has not urinated after 24 hours, or is attempting to urinate currently without success, meowing or yowling or showing signs of pain, or is very painful in the abdomen, then it may indicate a urinary tract blockage, a medical emergency that should be treated immediately.
