Q. I have a 13 yr old Maltese that had several teeth removed. He had a great appetite but now refuses to eat. Liver enzymes are 274.

A. If the tooth removal was done recently your dog may be having some gum and jaw pain as the mouth heals from the extractions. If he is on a dry food diet, moistening the food with water or feeding a wet food diet may help make eating easier for him while he heals. A bland meal of boiled chicken and rice may also be offered to be easy on the stomach and easy to chew. If his liver enzymes are elevated, your vet may want to monitor his bloodwork over a period of a few months to see if it was a one-time spike or if the values stay high. Your vet may then recommend a change in diet to help liver function or other supplements/medications to try and bring values down.
