A. While allergies can cause fur loss, if your dog is also not eating it may indicate another illness is underlying. It is best to schedule a veterinary appointment to make sure there isn't more than an allergy going on. If allergies are the cause, then switching foods to a diet that is free of allergenic ingredients such as wheat, corn and soy may help, as well as starting your dog on a daily allergy medication. The hair should start to regrow once the underlying problem is treated. You may also want to place an Elizabethan (cone) collar or T-shirt on your dog if he is very itchy and is licking or chewing at the areas in order to prevent a secondary infection from forming and further hair from being lost.
