Q. Why does my male cat bite me when he is told to stop doing something that he should not be doing?
JESSICA L DESROSIERS
A. Biting can sometimes be a defense mechanism against pain and it is always a good idea to schedule a vet visit if the behavior is suddenly appearing. If you are hitting or swatting at your cat to get him to stop he may bite in an attempt to protect himself from the "fight" you are starting. It is best to use other means of training such as redirecting behaviors, using aids such as scat mats to keep him off countertops and other non-direct methods of changing the behavior rather than directly reaching for him. If he is still having trouble, then speaking with a behaviorist or trainer in your area is best to start a tailored plan to changing his behavior positively.
