Q. My cat has bladder stones and the vet has prescribed a veterinary diet for urinary conditions but it is expensive. Can we use another type?

A. Prescription diets are usually recommended as they are specially formulated and tested to treat that specific problem. There are some over the counter urinary diets (such as Wysong Uretic) that may help, however they may not be tested or approved for treatment of bladder stones. Most vets will carry 2-3 different brands of prescription food, so if the one you are currently on is not an option due to price, it may be best to talk with your vet about switching to another. You may also be able to have your prescription sent to a company such as pet360 or 1800petmeds which often offer medications and food at lower cost than the clinic.
