Q. My dog seems to be constipated and has very smelly flatulence. Is it okay to give him Imodium?
A. Imodium should not be used in constipated dogs, as it can make the problem worse.
You can feed him a bland diet of plain boiled white rice and chicken, and if straining to pass feaces add a tablespoon of lactulose to his food (maximum 1 tbs twice a day for 1 day). If your dog shows no improvement, you should see your vet. There are various conditions that can cause constipation in dogs, and to diagnose some of them a physical exam is needed.
