Q. My dog was given an MRI and the result was a tumor in the pituitary gland. Without radiation what are some options? What if tumor in adrenal as well?
A. How old is your dog ? And how is he/she doing otherwise ? Radiation therapy is the only available treatment option for pituitary tumours in dogs. Radiation -treated dogs with smaller tumours have longer life expectations than those with larger tumours. Radiation therapy can also be effective in controlling and delaying neurological signs in dogs with large tumours, as well as prolonging survival. There are at least two scientific papers describing surgeries that proved beneficial to achieve remission, these procedures seem to have proved relatively safe but technically challenging , therefore this could be the reason why these procedures are not so widely available.
