Q. How do you get your dog to pay attention and listen to you?
A. Your training method should be strictly positive. You should be using encouragement, happy tones, NO SCOLDING, only praise and redirection.
You should be using high value treats to encourage your dog to pay attention to you and focus on you. Treats like chicken, mozzarella cheese sticks, hotdogs, diced ham, turkey pepperoni - all cut into tiny little pea sized pieces. You should be trying to use happy, high pitched tones, and lots of movement to get your dog to focus on you.
As soon as your dog looks at you, immediately feed a treat. You should also try clicker training, this helps dogs understand exactly when they look at you they receive a treat; it helps them feel like attention is rewarding enough.
Positive reinforcement is all about rewarding a behavior in hopes that the behavior will occur again. Reward HUGE for attention.
